The Clinton City Council approved the budget for the next fiscal year at a special meeting Thursday with council members defending the spending reduction and cuts in service. The vote was 5 to 1 with Lynn McGraw voting no and Paul Gassman was absent.
The council chose to cut the tax rate by 27-cents per thousand dollars of taxable value, which reduced spending by 260-thousand dollars and saving about 13 dollars a year on a 100-thousand dollar home. The closing of the Lyons Branch of the Public Library by the Library Board to meet spending cuts has been one of the reductions getting the most attention.
The tax rate in the approved budget is about 16-dollars and 32 cents per thousand dollars of taxable value
