Downpour! * updated to include rain damage to the Wilson Building

That Tuesday evening rain totaled 2.43 inches according to Clinton Area Weather Observer Jim Blaess. He added that about two inches of that total came in a period from about 5 to 6 P-M. Blaess said that was actually only the third measurable rain in August. He says there was .70 of an inch of rain on August 9th and .79 of an inch on the 10th.
The month’s total to date is 2.92 inches which Blaess says is just under the normal for the entire month of 4.41 inches.

The year to date total is a little over three inches above normal for the first eight months. Blaess says the precipitation through Tuesday is 28.26 inches which exceeds the total for the entire eight months of 24.92 inches.

The heavy rain is blamed for some exterior damage to the Wilson Building in downtown Clinton. Building and Neighborhood Services Director Jeff Chapman says some parts of the exterior covering of the building, that were in need of repair., were knocked off the building in the heavy rain.

He says the area was secured for the safety of pedestrians and motorists on Fifth Avenue South.
Chapman said there was no structural damage to the building.
The B-N-S Director says the owners of the building had representatives on site early this morning and engineers will be determining how to secure the facade.

The owners of the building are planning a renovation of the building in apartment units.

A spokesperson for the owners, Economic Growth Corporation, tells KROS NEWS they are compiling a full report related to the damage from the storm and it’s too early to determine the damage.  EGC’s top priority is working on issues related to stabilization of any damage.

The spokesperson also thanked the community for their support and the Clinton Fire Department, City Administration and downtown business owners for the timely response to notify us and secure the building.
