Door-to-Door Stormwater Survey to Be Completed on Sunday

You’ll see lots of yellow shirts in Clinton on Sunday as students working with Clinton working on two different projects will be in some neighborhoods. ‘Read more’ for the details in the statement from city hall. (yellow t-shirts are worn by those working on the projects)

Students from both Augustana College (Rock Island) and Augsburg College (Minneapolis) will be in Clinton on Sunday, October 4th between noon and 6pm conducting door-to-door surveys of houses in an area west of Bluff Boulevard from 2nd Avenue South to 13th Avenue North regarding stormwater practices at each residence. “The information gathered by the students will be used to determine the amount of stormwater being directed into the sanitary sewer system, which is critical information for determining the appropriate size of a pump station,” states Jason Craft, City Engineer.

Prior to Sunday teams of volunteers will be in the same neighborhood hanging information packets on doors.

The Stormwater Inflow project is one of many projects identified by the City of Clinton which is to be completed by Augustana students as part of the Sustainable Working Landscapes Initiative. “This partnership is a great opportunity for Clinton to get needed work done and it also allows Augustana students to apply what they are learning in the class to address real and pressing needs – a true win-win partnership,” says Reuben Heine, Augustana Professor of Geography. “My water resources students have worked closely with Mr. Craft to design educational material and survey questions about stormwater management. Not only do they hope to share what they have learned with Clinton residents, they are also excited to collaborate with students from our sister institution, Augsburg College.”

The students from Augsburg College, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, are going to be in Clinton as part of a River Semester, which has the students and faculty traveling the length of the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to New Orleans by canoe, bus, boat, and train. Dr. Heine adds that “the Augsburg students bring a wealth of experience after canoeing the reach of the river between Minneapolis and Clinton and will assist the Augustana students in the door-to-door survey.”
