Pursuit and death investigation near DeWitt, IA

On Sunday, December 20, 2015, at 1:17 p.m. deputies from the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 4492 140th St, Clinton for a complaint of a disturbance. ‘Read more’ for the complete official statement from the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.

When the first deputy sheriff arrived he was met by a white male pointing a handgun at him. The suspect then fled the area in a white Dodge pickup with the deputy in pursuit.
The pursuit continued around the northeastern portion of Clinton County with various stop stick tire deflation devices being deployed at various times which the suspect was able to evade. The pickup eventually came to a stop in the 400 block of East 11th Street in DeWitt near the high school.
Officers surrounded the vehicle and a trained negotiator made contact with the driver. At one point the driver discharged a handgun out the passenger side window but officers did not return fire. Officers could see the driver waving the handgun around inside the vehicle.
At 3:31 p.m., officers reported hearing a gunshot coming from inside the vehicle. Officers approached and observed the driver was unconscious and had suffered a wound to his chest. A hand gun was found near the driver in the passenger’s compartment. An ambulance on standby at a nearby staging area was summoned to the scene. The driver was pronounced as deceased.
The incident remains under investigation by the Clinton County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office. Other agencies assisting were the Iowa State Patrol, Clinton and DeWitt Police Departments, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the DeWitt Fire Department.
An autopsy is scheduled this week at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny.
