New Middle School Traffic plan

Here’s a copy of a letter sent to parents of Clinton Middle School students outlining the traffic pattern for pick-up and drop-off. Link to a map is included.

November 2014

Dear Parents/Guardians of Clinton Middle School Students:

The merger of the north – Lyons, and south – Washington, campuses of the Clinton Middle School brings excitement to our students, parents, staff, and community. As we continue to ‘team’ together to support your son/daughter we want to provide for students safe travel to and from school. Student’s safety is a top priority for all of us.

Through the work of the Clinton Community School District collaborating with city administration, fire & police departments and the local emergency management team a plan for safe drop off and pick up students has been created and described on the back of this letter. The described guidelines for the parking lots, if followed, will considerably help in dropping off students as well as picking them up. Our overall goal is to ensure that the parking lot is safe for students at all times. The City has now altered the posted speed limits on 13th Avenue North to reflect the opening of the school.

There will be 12 school buses that transport students to and from CMS. Buses will enter off of 16th St. NW starting at 7:30 each school day. Cars will NOT be able to enter from the 16th Street entrance from 7:30-8:00 and then again from 3:05-3:35. This will promote traffic flow and ensure student safety during arrival and dismissal times.

The city bus will also provide transport of CMS students. Our hope is that a city bus will come into the 16th St NW parking lot after school and pick up students. There is also a city bus route that is at the junction of 13th Avenue North and 14th St NW that will provide transportation for students who have their school ID. Students dropped off on 14th St. NW then will walk across the cross-walk on 13th Ave. North. Please contact the City Transportation Department for information regarding their posted routes.

(Please reference map-linked at the bottom the this page) When dropping off students before school or picking up your son/daughter after school please enter from the 13th Avenue entrance and follow 14th St. NW to the entrance of the school. Car drivers should stay to the left and follow the driveway that goes in front of the main entrance to CMS. Parents may have their son/daughters exit their vehicles – if students exit on the right hand side of the vehicle they should be attentive to other vehicles that may be passing by. This is a very congested time of day and we need to keep traffic moving as quickly and smoothly as possible.

After students have been dropped off, vehicles should proceed to the fire lane that is on the north side of the school (cars will stay to their left). The fire lane is not a drop-off or pick up area, this is simply a passageway to the other side of the building. At the end of the fire lane vehicles will need to yield to busses that may be leaving the 16th St. NW side parking lot. Cars will then proceed to the exit that leads to 16th St. NW. At the stop sign cars may turn either left to 13th Avenue North or right to Mill Creek Parkway.

When picking up a child due to illness or appointment, please park in the EAST parking space and come in to the office. The Fire Marshal states that no one is allowed to park in the fire lane; this is for emergency vehicles only and needs to remain open.

We appreciate your help in providing safe drop off and pick up for your students – our main goal is to ensure safety for our students.
Thanks for your support in following the described guidelines for safe drop off and pick up of your students. Our main goal is to ensure the safety of our students, your children, at CMS!

Respectfully,

Mr. Dan Boyd, Principal Mrs. Deb Sass, Associate Principal Clinton Middle School
