Ashford cuts impact campus plus some positions were eliminated in early November

Check out the complete formal statement from Ashford on the reductions.

In its continued efforts to right-size the Ashford University campus, the following sports will be discontinued after the 2015 spring semester: bowling, cross country, golf, and tennis. The move will impact approximately 50 students at the Clinton, Iowa campus. All of the affected student athletes have been informed, and all will receive any needed assistance in completing their educational goals. Student-athletes on the affected sports teams will still receive their athletic scholarships for as long as they are enrolled at Ashford University.

In addition, following the 2014-2015 school year, Ashford’s BW residential hall (former Best Western motel) will no longer be a student housing option. This will allow the University to house all of its resident students on the main campus, helping to create a positive and concentrated living/learning environment. Housing options for the 2015-2016 academic year were discussed with all resident students this week.

These important decisions were thoughtfully and carefully considered, and will help Ashford continue to focus its efforts on educating the whole person while paying solid attention to building a strong, sustainable campus culture around the University’s quality academic and athletic programs.

While these recent decisions will impact Ashford’s Clinton campus, there is no impact to non-student athletes, non-resident students, or students in their senior year at the campus. There is also no immediate impact to student athletes and resident students, as the decisions will not take effect until after the 2014-2015 school year.

Ashford is mainly an online education program with total student enrollment at period end was 59,552 reported in the recent third quarter report.

In an effort to better align the company’s employee headcount with the University’s total student enrollment, Ashford University and its parent company, Bridgepoint Education experienced a reduction in workforce in early November that included the elimination of 4 Bridgepoint positions and 12 Ashford positions in Clinton, Iowa. This reduction in workforce was necessary to ensure, moving forward, that the University would be appropriately sized while remaining quality-focused, student-focused, and efficient. With this reduction in workforce, Ashford University is now in a better position to meet its 2015 objectives.
Media reports in San Diego, the home the Bridgepoint headquarters, indicated that nearly 300 positions were eliminated in three stats.
