The Bluff elementary school PTA is leading a project to provide smoke detectors to the homes of every elementary student in the district – and that effort has grown beyond the initial expectations.
The effort started after a fire January 22nd killed four people in Clinton – including two students who attended Bluff elementary schools.
The Clinton Fire Department is joining in the effort.
The Bluff elementary school PPTA now has a goal of raising $50,000 to be used to purchase and install 3,000 tamper free-long like smoke detectors in each student’s home. P-T-A member Megan Comstock..says the idea has grown.
She says the initial response has been encouraging.
Fire Marshall Mike Brown says there is a long way to go to raise the funds, but it will help provide smoke detectors to many homes in the community. He says the plan would be to provide two smoke detectors for every students's home.
The fire department and other groups will help install the smoke detectors.
The Central Bank of Fulton, Illinois delivered a 200-dollar check to the PTA Monday and challenged other local banks to donate to the Clinton Smoke Detector Project.
Donations can be dropped off at the school or at the Clinton Fire Department.
