Clinton County Youth were among high school and middle school students participating in a mock caucus as part of statewide project. ‘Read more’ to find out who the local students supported and a complete local breakdown.
Their support followed state and national trends. The Clinton county mock caucus was held at held at the DeWitt high school.
The events are organized by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate’s Office, in conjunction with the Republican Party of Iowa and the Iowa Democratic Party.
Iowa high school and middle school students took part in both a Republican and Democratic mock caucus, and cast votes for the presidential candidate of their choice for both parties.
There were 77 students participating in the local Republican Caucus. Those students supported Donald Trump with about 26 percent support followed by Ben Carson with 23 percent. Marco Rubio with 15 percent and Jeb Bush with 14 percent were next.
There were 62 local students participating in the Democratic Caucus and 69 percent supported Bernie Sanders and 27 percent supported Martin O’Malley and 3 percent supported Hillary Clinton.
Statewide 22 counties participated. Ben Carson led the support of the Republican students with 22 percent. Statewide the students attending the mock Democratic Caucus there was 53 percent support for Bernie Sanders
