Clinton County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Eric Van Lancker has announced that Tuesday, May 3, 2016, will be a Special Election day for voters in Clinton County to vote on a $22 million bond referendum for a proposed jail/sheriff’s office/communication center/emergency management agency replacement facility. ‘Read more’ for the statement from the elections commissioner.
The Clinton County Board of Supervisors ordered the Special Election on Tuesday, March 8, 2016. The resolution ordering the Special Election also included the language that will appear on the ballot. That language is: “Shall the county of Clinton, state of Iowa, issue its general obligation bonds in an amount not exceeding the amount of $22,000,000 for the purpose of paying the costs of designing, constructing, equipping and furnishing a jail, sheriff’s office, 911/communications center and emergency management agency office and demolition of the existing facility?”
Van Lancker said the May 3 ballot will also include the opportunity for candidates to be elected to fill two vacancies on the Clinton County Agricultural Extension Council. Candidates interested in placing their names on the ballot for the Extension Council need to file candidate nomination papers and an affidavit of candidacy at the Clinton County Auditor’s Office before 5 p.m. on March 18. Candidates will need at least 25 signatures to place their name on the ballot. Candidates will also need to indicate on their nomination petitions and affidavit if they are seeking to fill the vacancy for the term that expires at the end of 2016 or the term that expires at the end of 2018.
Van Lancker said voting locations for the county-wide election will be announced next week along with satellite voting location opportunities. He added that absentee ballots will be available for the Special Election. However, it is not yet known when those absentee ballots will be available.
