Normal temperature in July but more rain than normal

The overall temperature in July was about normal, but with one big rainfall the month’s precipitation was more than normal in the Clinton area.

Official weather observer Jim Blaess says the overall temperature was within a couple-tenths of degree of the normal of about 75 degrees. (2016 average was 74.7 degrees with the overall average is 74.9 degrees)

The highest reading was on July 21st when it reached 93.  There were two days with 90 or above temperature and that compares to the normal of six days.

The lowest temperature of the month was 57 which was recorded on the 3rd and the 16th.

Precipitation for July was 5.68-inches and that’s about two inches above normal of 3.60 inches.

Blaess says it was 21st wettest July since 1878.

The weather observer also said that on July 6th there was 2.44 inches of rain in a 24 hour period.  He said that was the third highest 24 rainfall in the last 30 years and the 17th most in a 24 hour period in a July back the start of record in 1878.

For the year-to-date, Blaess says the precipitation is 23.27 inches compared to the normal of 20.51 inches for the first seven months.

This month, Blaess says the normal rainfall is about 4.41 inches.

He says there is also an average of four days with 90 or above temperatures.

But, Blaess says overall average temperatures start to drop.  He says the average high on August 1st in 84 and the average low is 64 and those drop to averages of 81 and 60 at the end of the month.
