A project to restore and rehabilitate Beaver Island in the Mississippi River in the Clinton area continues moving forward.
The project is part of the Upper Mississippi Restoration program – a collaboration of several different agencies.
A plan has been developed to dredge some of the lakes and backwater areas of the island-use that sediment to build up areas of the island. In a public presentation officials say that those efforts would help improve the fish habitat and allow for the planting of more diverse trees on island to diversify the habitat plus there would be improvements for mussels.
The project would cover about 16-hundred acres and the cost is estimated at about 20-million dollars. The funding is allocated thru the federal government.
Planners hope to be able to start the Beaver Island project in 2018 and estimate it would take about four years.
