December temperature was below normal with less snow than usual

The month of December went from warmer than normal to colder than normal with some below zero weather at the end of the month.

Clinton area weather observer Jim Blaess says over the first three weeks of December the overall temperature was averaging about seven degrees above normal. But, he says over the last ten days there were five days with below zero weather.  Blaess says that lowered the overall temperature to 26.1 degrees which is below the normal of 26.5 degrees.

The warmest day was 53 on the 4th and coldest was eleven below zero on the 27th.

Blass says precipitation for the month was 0.84 of an inch – which is less than the normal 1.82 inches.  The snowfall for the month was 5.4 inches which is below the average of 8.7 inches

The official weather observer says January has already started with a record low.

Blaess says it dropped to 20 below zero on January 1st which broke the record for the date of minus 17 set in 1968.

The last 20 below or colder reading was minus 27 on January 15th 2009.

For the month, Blaess says you can expect on average 1.45 inches of precipitation which includes a 9.4 inches of snow.

Blaess says the temperatures don’t change much over the month with an average high of 30 and a low of 15 at the beginning of the month to averages of 32 and 15 by the end of the month.
