Record cold for the date-but not coldest temperature in local weather records

The overnight low temperature set a record for the date and tied for the 2nd coldest temperature recorded in January since 1890.

Clinton area official weather observer Jim Blaess says the low temperature was 27 below zero.  He says that broke the record of 20 below set in 1966.   Blaess estimated the lowest wind-chill overnight was minus 53.

It was also 27 below on January 16th 2009.  Blaess says the lowest temperature recorded in Clinton in January was 28 below zero in 1894.

The coldest temperature recorded in Clinton, Blaess says was 29 below zero on February 2nd of 1996.
