Clinton City Officials were encouraged to help promote the Lincoln Highway that enters Iowa in the community and travels across the state.
Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway Coordinator Jan Gammon spoke the council about the new Corridor Management Plan. She explained the highway was established from Times Square in New York City to San Francisco. She says the road follows Highway 30 in Iowa through 13 counties and 43 communities.
Gammon said 50 to 70 restored military vehicles will be recreating the 1919 military cross country drive. That group will be overnighting in DeWitt August 22. She said another group of restored autos will be making a trip across the country on the highway later this summer.
Gammon said she would love to see a Welcome Center in Clinton.
Clinton City Administrator Matt Brooke added the idea of a Welcome Center is something the city is interested in pursuing, but needs the funds..
Gammon said-at first-she did not like the idea of improving or four-lane work on Highway 30 because it would diminish the Lincoln Highway-but says she has changed her mind.
She said he idea of the Lincoln Highway was to get people from here to there.
