ATTMEPTED SCAM INVOLVING SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Read the official statement from the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a telephone scam where the caller represents himself to be a Lieutenant with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office. The caller leaves a message that the person is to return his call as the Lieutenant is conducting an investigation.

A local man notified the sheriff’s office that his son had received a voice mail today with the instructions to call him back at 563-275-7430. When the number was called, he heard a female auto-attendant’s voice claiming to be from the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office. The auto-attendant provided options to connect the caller to various divisions with the agency.

The local man who called the number given was connected with a male subject claiming to be the Lieutenant who had left the voice mail. The “Lieutenant” advised that the caller needed to get a pen and paper and start writing things down related to an investigation. The local man felt that this was a scam and told the “Lieutenant” that he would have to find another way to converse with him. The local man then called the real number for the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office to report this matter.

The actual telephone number for the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office is 563-242-9211. Sheriff Rick Lincoln’s voice is what the caller will hear on the auto-attendant. Sheriff’s Deputies do carry and use cellular phones. If citizens receive a call from a person claiming to be a Deputy Sheriff who leaves a phone number other than our office phone, citizens may call 563-242-9211 Option 2 for Communications. This number is answered 24 hours a day. The caller will be able to confirm with a Telecommunicator that the name of the Deputy and the phone number are actually associated with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.
