Clinton Police Dept. Officer Involved In Traffic Chase With Suspect Shot And Killed (CPD Statement)

UPDATE FROM THE DCI: The individual who was shot by an officer with the Clinton Police Department has been identified as Jacob Matthew Dau, age 38, of Clinton, Iowa. Dau was shot and subsequently died following a vehicle chase in the late evening hours of April 7, 2020. The officer was not injured. Per departmental policy, the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave. Additionally, the police officer’s name will not be released until the officer has been interviewed.

No further information will be released at this time.


ORIGINAL STATEMENT

On April 7, 2020 at 10:45 p.m., an officer from the Clinton Police Department attempted to stop a motor vehicle near the intersection 4‘’’ Ave So & 2″^ Street. The suspect vehicle failed to stop for the officer. Officers pursued the suspect from Clinton, into Camanche.

The suspect vehicle traveled northbound on Highway 67, from Camanche back into Clinton, approaching the intersection of Highway 30. While attempting to stop the suspect, a Clinton Police Officer discharged his duty weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to Mercy One, where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the suspect is not being released at this time, pending notification of the next of kin.

An autopsy has been scheduled at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.

The Clinton Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, Camanche Police Department, Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton County Emergency Management and the Clinton Fire Department.

The case remains under investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations and the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.
