2nd Ward Council member submits resignation (letter & link to city application information included))

Second Ward Clinton City Council member Cyara Peterson is resigning from the council.

She made the formal announcement at end of the Tuesday night’s meeting saying she had to put family first.

Peterson called it the hardest decision she’s had to make since serving on the council.

The Second Ward council member encourage citizens to ‘step-up’ and apply for the position.

(Peterson’s resignation letter)

To the City of Clinton Council, Mayor, and City Administrator:

With great sadness, I am submitting this letter as notice of resignation as a member of the City of Clinton City Council. I have made this decision due to some unforeseen challenges within my family. Date effective January 1, 2021.

To the Clinton community,

When I made the decision to run for an elected position within local government, I had no idea I would receive so much of your support. (Which makes this even more difficult for me)  My goal within the position was to help bring issues that affect our community to the table that I felt were not seen through the same lens most of us see daily. During my time involved, I feel I have raised that awareness and planted some strong seeds to see the necessary changes in the future.

For every success, there are challenges.

With that said, it is with great gratitude and sadness I am submitting this letter as notice of resignation from the position of 2nd Ward Councilmember for the City of Clinton effective January 1, 2021.  Throughout this year I have learned so much about our beautiful city.  From its various departments, how its ran, budgeting, development, education, manufacturing, etc to its volunteer groups, community members, and all of the behind the scenes work involved. I will leave behind a record of advocating for the housing stock, common-sense city planning, and fiscal conservativism. I am happy to leave that legacy and hope the people I represent feel that I have always been fair, honest, and kept them informed. While I regret that I will no longer be able to represent my constituents in this capacity, I will not be going far. You all will still hear and see me involved! I am committed to finding other ways to give back to a community that has given me so much in this season of my life. Clinton is guided by leaders that are highly educated, each in their own piece that fits in this puzzle. Housing developments, smart infrastructure planning, and economic growth will remain focus. I am especially proud of the quality of life projects for residents and the emphasis on attracting people of all ages, especially young professionals.

Now the question arises. Who will be our council member from here forward?

Here is how that process will go, 1 of 2 ways:

  1. Anyone interested will need to submit and application (dates unknown yet) followed by an interview process of all applicants. Council will rank applicants with the highest ranked then appointed.
  2. A special election can be requested. In my opinion this is unnecessary and rather costly!

There is a 40 day timeline for either of these routes. Person appointed will remain in office for remainder of term, 3 years.
