Apartment building damaged by fire & suspect charged with setting that fire

A suspect has been charged in connection with a fire at a four unit apartment complex last night.


The Clinton Fire Department was called to 519 5th Avenue South about 10 o’clock last night. When they arrived firefighters found a small fire at the entry door with heavy smoke and flames visible at the rear of the residence. Extra personnel were called in to assist plus auto-aid from Camanche assisted at the scene. The fire was under control within 15 minutes but the estimated damage to the building is 75-thousand dollars. The fire department reported that no-one was home at the time of the fire.
The Clinton Fire Department responded with eleven personnel plus 6 overtime firefighters plus the aid from Camanche.
The Red Cross is assisting three tenants of the building
Clinton police reported that witnesses at the scene described a person of interest who was located in the area. This person, 57 year old David M. Champion of Clinton, was placed under arrest for Arson 1st degree, a class B felony.

The incident remains under investigation by the Clinton Police Department, Clinton Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s office.
