The Clinton Police Department is investigating a surge in illegal bank card skimming taking place throughout the city. Skimmers are designed to record information from credit card or bank card’s magnetic strip. Thieves place the electronic devices over card slots at ATMs. After unsuspecting people use the ATM, the culprits return and download the data. Additionally, skimming can involve the use of a hidden camera to obtain customers’ entry of their PINs into the ATM’s keypad. Lastly, a phony keypad on top of the real keypad, can be used to record every keystroke as customers punch in the PIN.
