Minor league football is coming to Clinton as the newly founded Chargers prepare for their first ever season this upcoming summer.
The Chargers will be a part of the Mid Central Football League which contains the Joliet Buccaneers Adult Amateur Football Team, Illinois Grizzlies Football, Indianapolis Assassins Football, Midwest Vengeance, Indiana Vipers Football, Michigan Hurricanes, Kentucky Spartans, Evansville Elite Football, Indy Bison and the Southern-Indiana Bobcats.
The owner, David Carlisle, is originally from Chicago and he’s been here in Clinton for about a year now. He saw that they had a team down in the Quad Cities and it’s a nine-man league but he wanted to start up an 11-man league here in Clinton.
That’s exactly what he’s trying to do as he builds a roster with the help of head coach Chance Wright and assistant coach Travis Birt. In fact, they have gotten a lot of interest locally not only here in Clinton but in the surrounding areas.
The Chargers will be looking to fill out their roster at their upcoming tryouts on Saturday March 16th at noon and Sunday March 17th at 2 p.m. at the Muddy River Rugby Field. Players have already been practicing on the weekend but they have not been mandatory yet.
Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to go out and try out. Being a semi-pro league, nobody gets paid it is just for fun.
The Clinton Chargers will continue to look for a home stadium ahead of their 2024 season.
