Camanche High School announced their 2024 Athletics Hall of Fame class. They will welcome Mark Metzger, Brenda Hugunin Metzger, Randy Vogel, Libby Schnoor, Derek Harksen, the 1988, 1989 and 1990 boys’ tennis teams as well as the 1966, 1967 and 1968 football teams.
Mark Metzger was a 1976 graduate from Camanche and a four-sport athlete who earned 12 varsity letters. He was a 2nd Team All-Conference basketball player and a member of a state-qualifying relay team in track and field.
After college he returned to teach and coach at Camanche, coaching football for 19 years, including six years as head coach. He was also the head boys’ track and field coach for 20 years. He coached several individual state champions as well as a championship shuttle hurdle relay team. Mark coached his team to five Big East Conference Championships.
His wife, Brenda Hugunin Metzger, was also a 1976 graduate from Camanche, serving as her classes salutatorian. She was a strong runner in track, qualifying for the state meet in the shuttle hurdle relay, sprint medley and the 4×200 meter relay three separate times.
She returned to Camanche to teach math and be the head girls’ track and field head coach where she coached them to four Big East Conference Championships and a state team runner up in 2004. She was the Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2004 as well.
Randy Vogel was a 1987 graduate from Camanche who was a standout three-sport athlete. He was a four-time state qualifier in wrestling, placing second in 1985 and third in 1987. He had 124 career wins and holds the school record with 20 major decisions.
Vogel was a big part of the 1987 State Championship team, being voted the MVP of the tournament and earning 1st Team All-State honors. In football he was also an impact player and a team captain.
Derek Harksen graduated from Camanche in 2014 playing all four of his sports at an exceptional level. As a football player he was a 1st Team All-State member as a punter. In baseball he was team captain and earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors. In his senior year he earned three first place finishes at the state track meet, winning the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes.
The last individual being inducted is Libby Schnoor, another 2014 graduate and the valedictorian of her class. Both academically and athletically she is gifted. In volleyball she earned 2nd Team All-State honors as well as being a three-time All-Conference player.
In track she was a four-year state qualifier while in both basketball and softball she earned All-Conference honors.
Under coach Gary Foster, Camanche continued to dominate tennis. They worked hard and earned back to back to back Class 1A State Championships in 1988, 1989 and 1990. From 1983 to 1990 they captured seven state championships.
The 1988 team defeated Lamars for their championship with Jeremy Dennis and Bill Buckman becoming doubles state champions. In 1989 they went on to defeat Atlantic to win the state title. Finally in 1990 they defeated Lamars once again to complete their undefeated season.
From 1966 to 1968 Camanche went 22 and five in football. Under head coach Gary Cross they won seven games in both 1966 and 1968 and had an eight win season in 1967.
