Clinton, IA – October 22nd, 2024 – Mediacom Communications ceased all operations at 112
North 2nd Street in Clinton on Tuesday, October 15th due to an immediate order to vacate the
building issued by City of Clinton officials. Rich Johannsen, City of Clinton Building Official and
Jeff Chapman, City of Clinton Fire Marshal evaluated the facility several days prior after a request
placed by Mediacom. Johannsen and Chapman thoroughly inspected the facility finding visible
signs of structural deterioration including large cracks and visible bowing on the floors.
Cracks in the brick walls became noticeable about 6 months ago leading Mediacom to seek
guidance from a structural engineer as well as several contractors. Findings from these
professional reviews led Mediacom to pursue an evaluation from City officials to properly
determine the safety of the building for staff and customers. In combination with the structural
engineer’s report obtained by Mediacom and Johannsen and Chapman’s on-site evaluation, the
City of Clinton determined an order to vacate was the safest course of action.
All Mediacom staff were evacuated safely from the facility, the building secured, and a notice
posted on the door to communicate the office closure to customers. Mediacom is working on a
plan of action for the current building and actively searching for a new facility to relocate its
operations within the City of Clinton.
“Mediacom acted swiftly to work with City officials to ensure the safety of its’ employees and the
Clinton customers that they serve,” said Clinton Fire Department Assistant Chief and Fire Marshall
Jeff Chapman. “Our walkthrough of the property, coupled with findings from the structural
engineers led us to issue an immediate vacate order to ensure everyone’s safety. Mediacom has
worked in cooperation with City Officials and met all requests.”
“We love serving and being a part of the Clinton community and are grateful to the City’s quick
response to our needs in evaluating the safety of our facility, “said Mediacom Senior Director of
Area Operations Beau Hicks. “Our Clinton team will continue to assist customers’ needs as we
coordinate with City officials on the next steps for our current building and search for a new facility
in Clinton.”
